Google showed off the latest updates and changes to Polestar cars at this year's CES show in Las Vegas. The updates include Google's new HD map, which will come out with Polestar 3 at the same time that Polestar 2 gets new remote control features.
"The updates are a direct result of our close relationship with Google and show the benefits of putting the new Android Automotive OS system in our cars," says Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath.
The Polestar 3 will be the first car in the world to use Google's new HD map, a navigation map with very detailed and up-to-date information about the roads. From what I hear the Volvo EX90 electric SUV is next in line for the upgrade. The HD map lets Polestar 3 cars combine their sensor technology with Google's exact knowledge of where the car is on the road and its location to offer driver assistance features like Pilot Assist. It also makes it possible for a car to drive itself.
A traditional navigation map doesn't usually have the details that an HD map does. A high level of detail is needed for the car's assisted-driving calculations, making it easier to read road markings and figure out where things like road signs are.
Jrgen Behrens, Google's Vice President and General Manager for Geo Automotive, says, "Google has a long history of mapping the world. Our new HD maps are made especially for car manufacturers, and we're enthusiastic to keep working with top car companies like Polestar to improve safety and comfort for drivers worldwide."
With the addition of remote-controlled functions, Polestar 2 owners can now check the status of their cars and control certain functions, like turning on the air conditioning, checking the battery level, and unlocking the doors, using a Google Assistant device that is compatible with the car. The features will first be available to users in the US. Over time, they will be made available in more markets.
