The plug-in hybrid SUV market is getting crowded, with many brands offering their own versions of electrified family vehicles. But if you're looking for something different, something that combines style, space, and smoothness, you might want to consider the Citroen C5 Aircross Hybrid. This is the hybrid variant of Citroen's flagship SUV, which was launched in 2017 and updated in 2022. It features a unique design, a spacious and comfortable interior, and a suspension system that promises a "magic carpet ride" effect.
The C5 Aircross Hybrid is part of Citroen's plan to offer an electrified option for every model in its lineup by 2025. It shares its platform and powertrain with other plug-in hybrid SUVs from the Stellantis group, such as the Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4, the DS 7 plug-in hybrid, and the Opel Grandland Hybrid4. However, it has its own distinctive personality and features that set it apart from its siblings.
Powertrain and performance
The Citroen C5 Aircross Hybrid uses a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine that produces 178 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. It works in tandem with an electric motor that adds 108 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque for a total system output of 225 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque. The power is sent to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The Citroen C5 Aircross Hybrid has a 13.2-kWh lithium-ion battery pack that can be recharged in about two hours using a 7.4-kW wall box or a standard household outlet in seven hours. The battery allows the SUV to travel up to 34 miles on electric power alone, according to the WLTP cycle. The official fuel economy rating is 166 mpg (UK) or 138 mpg (US), while the CO2 emissions are 32 g/km.
The C5 Aircross Hybrid offers four driving modes: Electric, Hybrid, Sport, and Comfort. In Electric mode, the SUV can reach speeds of up to 84 mph without using a gasoline engine. In Hybrid mode, the powertrain automatically switches between electric and gasoline power depending on the driving conditions and the battery level. In Sport mode, both power sources work together to deliver maximum performance. In Comfort mode, the suspension system adapts to provide a smoother ride.
The C5 Aircross Hybrid is not a sporty SUV, but it has enough power and torque to handle most situations easily. It can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 8.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 140 mph. The transition between electric and gasoline power is seamless and barely noticeable, thanks to the smooth transmission and sound insulation. The regenerative braking system also helps to recover energy and extend the electric range.
