The new Candela C-8 'powered by Polestar' is the first product born from Polestar and Candela's partnership. Polestar will supply batteries and charging technologies for Candela's electric hydrofoil boats, according to an agreement signed in August between the two Swedish electric mobility businesses.
The Candela C-8 electric boat 'powered by Polestar' is expected to have the same 69 kWh battery pack and rapid charging technology as the Polestar 2 Standard range Single motor. Candela forecasts a single charge to provide up to 57 nautical miles of range at a cruising speed of 22 knots, equivalent to comparable powerboats with inboard combustion engines. When traveling at high speeds, the range is two to three times that of regular electric boats.
"With Polestar batteries, the Candela C-8 becomes the first electric boat capable of driving to areas previously only accessible by a boat powered by an internal combustion engine. And with that, the Candela C-8 'powered by Polestar' marks a significant step forward in marine electrification," Candela's CEO and creator, Gustav Hasselskog, explains.
The combination of unique Candela and Polestar technologies allows for good electrical performance at sea. An efficient direct-drive outboard engine powers the Candela C-8 dubbed the Candela C-POD and runs at more incredible speeds on computer-controlled wings that lift the hull above the water's surface. Compared to typical motorboats, this technique reduces energy usage by up to 80%.
Polestar also provides the Candela C-8 electric boat with rapid charging technology and the 69 kWh battery pack from the Polestar 2. Polestar also invests in research and development to integrate this technology with maritime software, allowing it to be transferred from land to water.
"Sharing experience with Candela in the field of battery technology and transportation development helps to reach the common aim of a future where all modes of mobility are sustainable," says Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath.
Polestar is the first company to supply batteries and charging components to a third party in this manner. With this collaboration, Polestar's efforts to develop sustainable electric mobility extend beyond the automobile industry.
